Dates: July 27th to August 7th, 2009
Location: Hamburg High School
Times: 9am - 3pm
Fee: $80 for students; $160 for teachers
Who Can Attend: Any high school student or teacher - (incoming 9th Graders are welcome, as are graduating Seniors)

What you can expect to do as a participant:

  • Learn from survivors and experts in the field about the Holocaust and the genocides in Rwanda and Darfur, as well as the role of the United States in responding to these genocides
  • Find out what other students and teachers around the nation have done to address Human Rights atrocities
  • Meet other students and teachers who share your passion to change the world
  • Build your leadership skills, and develop a real plan for action in your community

Participants in the Summer Institute will experience:

  • Joe Diamond - Auschwitz Survivor
  • Victor Habinshuti - Rwandan Genocide Survivor
  • Fidele Diing Dhan - Former "Lost Boy of Sudan"
  • Mr. Charles Zappo and Mr. Miron Wasik - WW II Liberators of Dachau
  • Carl Wilkens - the only U.S. citizen to remain in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. His choice to stay prevented the massacre of hundreds of children over the course of the one hundred day atrocity.
  • Professor David Crane - the Founding Chief Prosecutor for the Special Court for Sierra Leone (and International War Crimes Tribunal), appointed by the Secretary General of the United Nations
  • Dr. Allida Black - the Head of the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project, and perhaps the world's expert on Mrs. Roosevelt?s contribution to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights
  • Mr. Henry King - Assistant Prosecutor at the 1946 Nuremberg Trials of the Nazis
  • Mr. Eli Rosenbaum - Chief Nazi Hunter of the U.S. Department of Justice
  • Mr. Gabriel Bach - Assistant Prosecutor of leading Nazi Adolph Eichmann
  • Darfur activist Mark Hanis of the Genocide Intervention Network
  • Gregory L. Peterson - President of the Robert H. Jackson Center
