On Monday, August 25th, 2008, the students of the Summer Institute were privileged to be the guests of Mr. Greg Peterson and Professor David Crane at the Second Annual International Humanitarian Law Dialogs Conference, held at the Chautauqua Institute.
There, the students had the unbelievable opportunity of hearing first hand accounts of three prosecutors who tried leading Nazis after the Holocaust, as well as the judges for the Genocide Tribunals for Rwanda, Cambodia, Darfur, Sierra Leone, and the former Yugoslavia.
The highlight of the day was the personal audience our students enjoyed with Mr. Ben Ferencz, who was in charge of prosecuting the The Einsatzgruppen Case, or the mobile killing squads of the Nazis, in what was labeled "the biggest murder trial in history". Another special moment was when of the Institute's students, Adri Alcivar of Silver Creek High School, received a special honor by Professor Crane's group Impunity Watch for her essay on the importance of human rights. This essay can be found on the Impunity Watch website at: http://www.impunitywatch.com/special_features/2008/08/the-importance.html.
Professor David Crane was kind enough to send along the signed picture of the prosecutors that were present, as well as the Second Chautauqua Declaration that they signed, a document that supports the rule of law among people of the earth.
In short, our students and staff enjoyed an unforgettable day, one that we look forward to repeating as part of next year's Summer Institute.
