EMMA'S EFFORTS TO HELP ORPHANS IN GHANA

Summer Institute Student Reaches Out to Help Children in Africa
From the WGRZ Website, August 8th, 2009

Emma Reid excels in school, sports, and in her community. The 15 year old is about to enter her junior year at Sacred Heart Academy in September, but her sights are already set on what she wants to do over Christmas break.

Emma is working hard to find a way to travel to Africa, where she hopes to help orphan children in Ghana. As an active member of a human rights class this summer, she is surrounded by young people who support her cause. However, Emma's main challenge is raising the money she needs to make the journey.

Her heart goes out to the underprivileged children who have little food or clothing, and inadequate resources for a proper education.

"Just seeing the pictures of all the devastation, the way they live, it pulled on my heart. I really want to go help them and learn from them and experience their culture," says Emma.

Emma says for just a few thousand dollars a school can be built for the children in Ghana. The harsh living conditions and weather make it difficult to maintain a quality education.

In September, Emma is holding a fundraiser and basket raffle to raise funds so that she and her mother can make the trip to Africa.
