Fall and Spring Refreshers:
The Summer Institute was proud to hold two Saturday refresher events for our students, held on a Saturday in November 2008, and in March 2009:
In fall, the main speaker was Mrs. Marianne Goldstein, a survivor of Kristallnacht, or the 1938 Night of Broken Glass--the event which many historians view as the beginning of the Holocaust.
Mrs. Goldstein shared her memories of how that night affected her family, as well as her thoughts on why it is so important for the students to remember the Holocaust. More information can be learned about her presentation from a Buffalo News article that can be found here: http://www.buffalonews.com/lifearts/next/story/511939.html
In the spring, our students were privileged to hear the presentation of Holocaust survivor Sophia, who as sent to Bergen-Belsen as a teenager living in Holland. In addition to describing her experiences in the Holocaust, Sophia spoke passionately on the need for the students to remember the 80th birthday of Anne Frank by taking an active role in the world.
We were thrilled to bear witness to their memorable presentations, and for their efforts to repair the world.
